Children’s Artwork Display for Less Than $5

This is one of my favorite projects to date – also the easiest and least expensive: the children’s artwork display located in our Family Command Center  – otherwise known as the mud room.

Children's Art Display Less than $5 | Five Marigolds

I wanted plenty of space where the children could hang their artwork and good grades with pride, without that messy cluttered look on the fridge. It also needed to be really flat to the wall, since the area I’d designated is in a space the width of a hallway.

Here’s how I did it:

  • Buy these eye hook screws and wire at the hardware store for less than $5 total (or spend a few extra bucks and shop Amazon at the links above if you want to save a trip to the store).
  • Drill holes into the wall where you want your eye hooks to go. Screw the eye hooks into the wall by hand.  Then, wrap your wire around one of the hooks a few times. Stretch it to the other eye hook, pulling and straightening as you go. Wrap it around that eye hook 2-3 times and cut the wire.
  • I already had these cute little inexpensive clips on hand, leftover from Eve’s party favors. They work great for holding the various art and school papers the kids bring home.
  • Voila! Children’s art center complete in 20 minutes and for less than $5.

These photos. They’re bad. This is a tricky, low-light place to take photos with horrible orangey-pink energy-saving bulbs. Forgive me. You get the idea, right? What do you think of my low-tech art center?

Neutral Fall Mantle Inspiration

It’s feeling more like fall outside, and I’m loving my latest mantle decor. I’ve struggled with what to do above my fireplace and have discovered the following tips to make my changing decor look good, every time:

  1. Varying Heights – Think of it like a triangle or inverted triangle and balance your decor so that you have varying heights.
  2. Focal Point – When your room or mantle lacks a focal point, it can be displeasing to the eye, and it may not be obvious why. However, when you add a focal point for the eye to gravitate to, it becomes much more attractive and feels more balanced.  You can create a focal point with one or more items. In this case, the mirror creates a large neutral backdrop and the circular tray takes the focal point slightly off-center, while still managing to look balanced.
  3. Layer – Add interest by adding layers of color and texture. As I mentioned above, the mirror adds dimension gives shape, but the plants, vases, tray and monogram add layers of interest across the mantle.
  4. Filler – Some people opt out of filler for a more clean look, but adding the little extras like a small aloe plant in a clean square bowl and a flat twig wreath in the background really finish the look to me.

Loving Lately – Fall Edition

I love exchanging “favorite things” with my girlfriends, and I love the idea of passing those things along here on the blog. I’ve tried all of these products personally, and my recommendations are not sponsored by any of the brands represented.

Here are just a few items I’ve been loving lately – I hope you find some new favorites!

Wet Brush I love this brush for my own hair, but the reason I bought a second one when I realized it was the ONE way I could brush my daughter’s hair without tears. I even got the travel size! I wash and condition her hair in the bathtub in the evening, and then brush through it with this while it’s still wet. The next morning her hair is still mostly tangle-free, and I’m able to brush through it again. If she has any bad tangles when it’s try, I’ll actually wet the brush or the area of hair to get the tangle out.

PopSugar Must Have Box I just love opening presents, and with this service it’s like getting the most amazing box of gifts from my BFF who knows me SO well each month. Seriously, this is a little luxury subscription that has introduced me to so many fabulous things in the past.  I’ve shared this with so many friends who have subscribed and feel the same way! When you sign up here, you can use one of the following referral codes to get $10 off! ABX17YZ or B213YMZ. (PS The new

Here’s a look at one of the recent boxes I loved, valued at more than $100.

Comfy statement clothes I have been loving ILY Couture lately because they have the cutest tees and sweatshirts in the coziest materials. I have this sweatshirt and this tee. See? I even can pull it off after a salon makeover by my daughter. makeover with e sm

Gap 1969 Denim Sateen Jogger These are the most comfortable pants I own. I think I’ve been complimented on them every time I’ve worn them (and hurry, they’re on sale now!).

2015 Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar Kit This one might seem a little random, but I love these Advent Calendars because they not only work great as a gift, but they also work great for inexpensive Star Wars party favors (check them out here, along with more Star Wars favor ideas!) that are a HUGE hit each year. That’s just $1.66 for each favor that your party guests will actually use! Hurry though – these always sell out way before December!

Roomba 880 Okay, so I definitely consider this a luxury item, but now that we live in a home with dark wood floors and three messy children, I don’t want to know a life without this little machine. We set it to run automatically overnight while we’re sleeping, and in the morning, our floors look great! That’s no small feat in our home, so we feel it’s been worth the price.

Photo Triggers As a photography hobbiest, I’ve started realizing how few images I have with me in the shot. I want to remember myself as part of the family memories in this stage of life, so I’ve tried to get in the photo more. That means triggers. I have two:

  • HISY Trigger  – This trigger works with your iPhone for on-the-go photos anywhere. It’s small, so tuck it in your purse or in your car so you have it when you need it.
  • Canon Wireless Remote – I use this with my Canon DLSR camera, but you can use this remote for your Nikon DSLR. I have an older model of this remote that I’ve used for years, and am just starting to get use out of.Photo taken using my Canon Wireless Remote

So now, I’m getting more images like this. How else would I capture painting my baby’s piggies for the first time?

Expo Disc Speaking of photography, this thing has changed my photos for the better, and I wish I hadn’t waited so long to get it. I used to struggle with getting a good custom white balance I could trust, which lead to more time consuming post processing. With this, all I do is get my settings, place the Expo Disc over my lens and take a photo of the light source, then, remove the Disc, set my custom white balance as usual, and go! This company has lots of great video tutorials on the product to make it even easier. I highly recommend it!

Command Picture Hanging Strips Since moving to our new home, these babies have been a life saver. My husband hates hanging photos and leveling them. I “have trouble visualizing” which leads to more picture hanging…and holes in the wall. That’s not good for a marriage, folks. So, I buy these in the large packs and hang photos at my every whim. The best part is that If I don’t get it quite right, I just lift it off the wall and reposition it, as long as it still fits on the strip on the wall. If not, I just take them off the wall and start over again. Easy breezy. I’ve never had any trouble with these, but I use the strips that hold up to 16 lbs.,  just in case.

Star Wars Jedi Luke Skywalker: All it takes is a Karate uniform top, a bathrobe or bed sheet (or you can buy a Jedi cape inexpensively here), some khakis and a pair of boots – and a blue light saber, of course. Here is how I envisioned the costume:

Sock Hop – I love this look for a brother and sister! The boy look is super easy, of course. For the girls, I paired a pink tutu pettiskirt with a cardigan, scarf and some black Mary Janes. Either cut out your own “poodle’ or grab a really inexpensive one online. Add some cute glasses for a final touch!

Here’s how it looked on my little one (Yeah…that was before her hair was done, but the only happy look I got. Toddlers!):

Baby Jazzerciser: This goes down as my favorite costume yet and it’s super easy. Just pair a baby onesie with a bright cut-up onesie,  legings or tights, some baby legwarmers or Baby Legs (or cut up some old socks) and use a knit baby headband for, well, the headband. I actually cut the elastic tops off of some baby socks for the little baby wristbands! My mother sewed an adorable boom box to complete the look. You can get something similar here or here.

Here’s how my little one rocked it:

Baby Kitty Cat: This one can’t get any easier. Combine a black baby onesie with black leggings or tights, and maybe a cute matching fur vest or black tutu pettiskirt, and you’ve got yourself a kitty cat! Add the finishing touches of a black nose and whiskers using eyeliner, and don’t forget the kitty ears! You can currently buy kitty ears headbands at the Target Dollar Spot, online here, or you can make them on your own. Use a thin feather boa from the dress up pile, and cut it up to make “fur” wrist cuffs and use as the tail.

New Quaker Chewy Thin Mint Bars and Free Printable Wrapper

We’re gearing up for Back to School around here, which is why I was thrilled when BzzAgent recently sent me two free boxes of their new Chewy Girl Scouts Thin Mint granola bars. Talk about a beautiful marriage of foods! Each year we buy Thin Mints in bulk and hoard them until the next cookie selling season, so I’m thrilled to start seeing Thin Mint flavored goodies popping up in the grocery store year-round.

BzzAgent is an organization that works with brands and provides its ambassadors with samples and coupons in exchange for trying products, sharing their honest opinion, and spreading the word. In this case, the task is easy, because these granola bars are super yummy and kid-approved.  When Dub took his first bite he proclaimed it “Ahh–mazing” and asked if he could have it as his lunchbox treat at school. No problem!

I love to slip little notes and jokes into his lunchbox daily to let him know I’m thinking of him, so I made a few super simple granola bar wraps to add a special touch to his treat. Of course, I couldn’t leave Evelyn out so I made a couple of girly-girl wraps as well.

Want to try these granola bars for yourself? They can find at your local grocery store. Want the wrappers for your kid’s lunchbox? Click here to download your free granola bar wrap printable!

Free Back to School Printable: Minecraft Lunchbox Jokes

Dub just loves clever jokes and puns. When I asked him what he most wanted me to pack in his lunch box for his first day of school, he told me he wanted a Minecraft joke.

There aren’t many options out there for Minecraft lunchbox printables, so I created one on me own, an today I’m sharing it with you.
